For some time, I have found the spiritual and playful aspects of rabbits fascinating. While sculpting virgins, I began to explore rabbits in my work. I allowed the shapes to emerge and the expressions on the faces to evolve. It was only later, when I looked into the symbolism of virgins and rabbits, that I found that during the Renaissance rabbits were a symbol for the Virgin Mary. I had followed two distinct threads in order to express beauty, and the paths circled back to the same place.
Both the rabbit and the virgin are symbols for birth and rebirth. Rabbits are a contradictory and cross-cultural symbol of cleverness and foolishness, cowardice and courage, and rampant sexuality and virginal purity.
