“Art is a conversation. The artist speaks, the viewer receives—and the dialogue begins. Sherlin Hendrick’s new body of work, “Caged,’ is an articulate bestiary that invites a curiously personal discourse.” Anne DeGrace, Articulate Magazine
“Jackal is an amazing piece! It has so much energy, and it captures the theme so perfectly. We are thrilled that is is part of the exhibit Mood.” Amy Matteson Neill, Creative Director, Art Fluent.

“Caged” is a contemporary bestiary in which the animals portray the stories we tell ourselves—those stories that keep us locked in unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors, hence the title of the show.
A pair of jackals, entitled Jackal and Hide, describes emotional codependency. One rabbit twitches with anxiety; another exhibits a passive-aggressive attitude. A puffin is befuddled; a rooster, arrogant. There is a calculating vulture, a needy pig. A lemur wrestles with addiction, while an avaricious dog and a reactionary cat suggest the two sides of a politician.
I want this body of work to be accessible to all ages and to spark dialogue. I feel animals can create that doorway because they are relatable, and gender, race and socioeconomic backgrounds are removed.
I’m not about being in someone’s face. I’m interested in what provokes thought, and I want to do it in a gentle way. Once you understand something about yourself you can see the humor in it, and then there’s a healing.
