This collection began when I unconsciously made a young innocent nun. That sculpture inspired me to look symbolically at virgins and virgin birth, and the controversy that exists around them, e.g. the influence that virgins have had in the past, the value of virginity in our culture today, and the role the “virgin mind” plays in inspiration and creativity. This inspired me to make more holy women, including the two most well known virgins in Christianity, the Madonna and Jesus. It also led me to create the “Geisha” series, referencing a tradition wherein a young girl’s maidenhood could be sold to the highest bidder.
